Yoga for Men

Until recent history yoga was practised strictly by men. While women are particularly targeted by the commercial yoga industry, men can reap all the benefits too!

Apart from teaching you breathing techniques to help you cope better with stress and anxiety, yoga can also help tackle belly fat and give you a leg up in the weight room! By supplementing your regular lifting routine with yoga classes, you hone in on all the stabilizer muscles typically not used when weight lifting with machines. The core is worked intensely in a yoga practice something that tends to be neglected when weight training which usually involves ‘arms today’ or ‘legs today’.

Deep abdominal breathing is a huge part of yoga, and it activates the parasympathetic nervous system. This lowers levels of cortisol, a hormone that forces your body to hold on to belly fat. Training yourself to breathe deeply through yoga can reduce stress and cortisol levels in your daily life.

The element missing from most sport orientated workouts is stretching. Yoga gives you the opportunity to spend an entire hour on deep, solid stretching packaged into a challenging type of exercise.

Yoga is also great for those who are not able to fall asleep or stay asleep as well as others. Along with reducing stress and anxiety you will start to notice tension in the body releasing. Unfortunately men are notorious for not stretching well, but once you start to stretch those muscles, you'll release toxins helping to naturally induce slumber.

So time for you guys to go out and buy a yoga mat (and yes they come in other colours than pink and no you don’t need to wear spandex!)
